Builders find bathhouse in Spain - 19th April 2021

Builders have discovered a historic building in Seville, Spain. They were repairing a bar when they found an ancient bathhouse. Before modern bathrooms, people used bathhouses to wash and relax. A popular tapas bar now stands where the bathhouse was. The Islamic design is nearly one thousand years old.

The Giralda Bar has served customers since 1923. Last summer, builders were repairing the bar. They found a star-shaped hole in the ceiling.

The bar’s owners contacted archaeologists. In total, 90 skylights were uncovered. They discovered walls which were painted with traditional Islamic art.

The archaeologists realised it was a bathhouse. They were amazed by the decoration. It is the best Islamic bathhouse in all Spain.

The Giralda Bar was built about 100 years ago. It was designed by an architect called Vicente Traver. Today, the bar’s four owners are pleased Traver kept the ancient bathhouse. Their customers can now enjoy this beautiful, historic building.
