Superfood jackfruit in demand - B1

Jackfruit: a new superfood - 3rd July 2020

Jackfruit is a green and spiky fruit with a strong sweet smell. It has become the latest superfood.

People have eaten jackfruit for a long time in South Asia. A lot of jackfruit grows there. So much jackfruit grows that tonnes of it used to be wasted every year.

India is the biggest producer of jackfruit in the world. Now, they are selling it as an alternative to meat.

Chefs love it because you can do so much with it. You can make cakes, juices, and ice cream with it or fry it and add it to curries. In the West, it's used in burgers, tacos and cutlets.

Vegans and vegetarians love it and now meat-eaters are buying it too. Scientists are still learning about its health benefits.

James Josep started a company called Jackfruit 365, which makes jackfruit flour.

Josep: "Jackfruit is one of the most under-researched superfoods in the world. Nobody has paid attention to jackfruit."

"So for example, 30 grams of jackfruit flour has one gram of pectin. That is the equivalent of three apples. An apple a day keeps the doctor away because of pectin.”
