Island caretaker needed - 24th May 2021
An extraordinary job opportunity is being advertised. The work involves tending to a castle on an English island.
The historic island of St Michael's Mount is situated close to the coast of Cornwall, southern England and it is looking for a castle officer. It needs someone who can stay over at least five nights a week. They will be responsible for practical tasks to maintain the place.
The island lies 450 metres from the mainland and is reached by ferry boats. At low tide, visitors can reach the island on foot. However, at high tide, you need to take a ferry, so it's probably not the best job for people who get seasick!
Another downside to island life is the fact that restaurants cannot deliver there. But for those who aren't keen on junk food and enjoy a quiet life, it could be the perfect job!
The island is managed by the National Trust and St Aubyn Estates. The castle has been the St Aubyn's family home for centuries. The family are hoping to hire someone who is tactful and quiet, and with a caring attitude. The person needs to have conservation skills too. The job includes checking public rooms after visits and general maintenance tasks.
The oldest part of the castle is from the 12th century. A religious group of men lived there. The island takes its name from St Michael. It is said that he appeared to some fishermen in 495 AD, long before the island was first lived on.
