Shopping for love in Spain - B1

Shopping for love - 16th September 2024

Is this the end of dating apps? There’s a new dating trend in Spain. Single people are looking for a partner at the supermarket, Mercadona.

The process is strange but simple. Singles visit the supermarket between 7pm and 8pm. They put a pineapple into their trolleys and turn it upside down. Then, they head to the wine section.

The website The Olive Press says that there are optional items too. Someone who wants a serious relationship can add a box of chocolates or sweets to their trolley. If they want something casual, they add lettuce or a vegetable.

Some people think that the trend was started by Mercadona. But the business says that it didn’t. In fact, the trend’s annoying Mercadona employees. These customers aren’t buying the food. Employees have to put it back.

In Bilbao, one store filled with singles. There were so many people that the supermarket had to call the police. No one was arrested.

The trend’s popular with younger people. Gen Z and Millenials have used dating apps since their teens. Now, this trend shows singles may want to find love face to face.

For some, the Mercadona hour feels more real than online dating. So for your next date, try going shopping.
