Harris to run for vice president - 19th August 2020
In the United States, Joe Biden has chosen Kamala Harris as his future vice president. The Democrat candidate Joe Biden is running for president against Republican Donald Trump.
Harris's family comes from Jamaica and India. If she wins, she'll be the first black or Indian-American vice president. She’ll also be the first female vice president.
Joe Biden: "And this morning all across the nation, little girls woke up, especially little black and brown girls, who so often feel overlooked and undervalued in their communities. But today, today just maybe they're seeing themselves for the first time in a new way as the stuff of president and vice presidents."
Harris has been first before. She became the first female attorney general of California. She was the first African or Indian-American to have that job. She was also the first Indian-American to become a senator.
In 2019, Kamala Harris tried to become the Democrat’s presidential candidate, but in December 2019, she left the race. She later said Joe Biden should become president.
Harris: “This is a moment of real consequence for America. Everything we care about, our economy, our health, our children, the kind of country we live in, it's all on the line.”
The US elections are happening in November 2020.
