Scientists fight dengue fever - 21st June 2021
Scientists have reduced the number of dengue fever cases. Cases decreased by 77% in a city in Indonesia.
Dengue fever is a dangerous disease. It affects millions of people each year. It is spread by mosquitoes. Scientists in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, tested a new way of stopping mosquitoes from spreading the disease.
The scientists added a special bacteria into mosquitoes’ bodies. The bacteria doesn't hurt the mosquitoes. But it makes it difficult for dengue fever to live in the mosquito. This stops the mosquitoes giving the disease to people.
The results of the test were very positive. Fewer people in Yogyakarta got dengue fever during the test. And fewer people needed to go to hospital with dengue fever.
Dengue fever has become a bigger problem in recent years. 50 years ago, there weren't many cases. But there are now around 400 million cases a year. It can be difficult for hospitals to deal with so many cases.
Scientists are pleased with the results of the test. They believe their idea could end dengue fever forever.
The bacteria may also be the solution to other dangerous diseases. Mosquitoes also spread malaria, Zika, yellow fever, and many other illnesses. Scientists are hopeful that they can now stop these diseases.
