Wildfires rage through Greece - A2

Big Fires in Greece - 11th August 2021

Huge fires are burning everything in Evia, Greece. Many people live on Evia island. But they are leaving everything there. The weather is too hot. And the fires are growing.

The fires are destroying people's homes and lands. Konstantinos Triantafyllou is an old man. He lives in Evia. He is upset.

Konstantinos Triantafyllou: "They burned us, they burned a paradise. They have no shame!"

Many countries are helping Greece. But people from Evia island are angry. They want the government to do more.

Giannis Selimis: "We are in a tragic situation. We are left in God's hands. We do whatever we can with our own means. The state is absent."

The hills and large forest are helping the fire to grow. This is making it difficult for firefighters. Hundreds of people left the island on boats.

Louisa is too old to work. She is retired. She is afraid. She won't have anything after the fires.

Louisa: "People lived off the forests, the crops, the olives, raising livestock and tourism. None of that is left now."
