New rules for sign language - 21st February 2022

Many deaf people use sign language. In the UK, British Sign Language may become an official language.

Some politicians want to make a law. They want new rules to help British Sign Language (BSL). Now, the government wants the new rules too.

The rules will help people to learn BSL. Sign language will become more important.

Deaf people will have more privacy. Now, they can't talk to their doctor. Their family has to help them.

Rosie Cooper is a Labour party politician. She suggested the new rules. Her parents are deaf. She had to help her parents a lot. She doesn't think this is fair.

Sign language is an official language in 41 countries. In the UK, up to 250,000 people use BSL every day. But BSL is only an official language in Scotland.

David Buxton works for the British Deaf Association. He wants equal rights for deaf people.
