Two African women on Booker Prize list - 30th November 2020
Every year, a writer wins the Booker Prize. It is a book competition. It is for the year’s best book in English.
The Booker Prize judges read lots of new books. They make a list of the best books. Then, they choose a winner. The winner gets £50,000.
This year, there were two African women on the list. It was the first time this happened. This will help other African writers.
The two women are Maaza Mengiste and Tsitsi Dangarembga. Mengiste is Ethiopian American. She is the first Ethiopian to be on the Booker Prize list. The name of her book is 'The Shadow King'.
Dangarembga is from Zimbabwe. The name of her book is 'This Mournable Body'. It is about a woman in Zimbabwe.
The two writers are happy. Their success will make African writers popular.
Douglas Stuart was the winner of this year’s Booker Prize. He won for his first book. The name of his book is ‘Shuggie Bain’.
