Dutch train caught by a whale - B1

Whale sculpture saves train - 16th November 2020

A sculpture of a whale has saved a train. It stopped the train from crashing into the water below.

The metro train was meant to stop at a station, but it continued past the station and crashed through a safety barrier. Then, it hit a whale sculpture at the end of the train tracks, which stopped it.

The sculpture is of the tails of two whales. It was made out of strong plastic by artist Maarten Struijs . In 2002, it was put in the water at the end of the station. Mr Struijs said he was surprised the sculpture held the train.

The train was empty at the time of the crash. Only the driver was on board and he was able to get off the train safely.

Emergency services arrived at the station and tried to work out how to remove the train.

At the moment, it is unclear why the train ran past the station.
