The viral puzzle Wordle has been an instant hit across the world. Now, it seems you'll be able to play it for nothing for years to come.

Wordle was designed by Reddit engineer Josh Wardle to pass the time with his partner during lockdown. It's an extremely simple game which is web-based and generally quick to complete. At the moment, there's no cost to users and no advertising either.

The steps are straightforward to follow. The puzzle only allows players one word per 24 hours, and users only have six guesses to reveal the hidden word of the day. With each word you guess, feedback is given.

A green letter means that your letter is correct and in the right position, while a gold letter tells you that your letter's correct, but not in the appropriate place. Letters which aren't in the secret word turn grey.

The game's sudden popularity has shocked many. A mere 5,000 people visited the website in October 2021, but just three months later there were 45 million, in January 2022. Most visitors are based in the US, Australia and the UK and spend at least eight minutes on the site.

Recently, the puzzle was purchased by the New York Times for a seven-figure sum, which has Wordle fans concerned that they'll now be required to pay. However, the code for the puzzle can be easily copied and stored. There are step-by-step guides that instruct you how to do this too. This will provide players with seven more years of free Wordle entertainment.
