Researchers from Kew Gardens, London's Royal Botanic Gardens, have grown our understanding of life on Earth. Last year, scientists named 76 new species of plant and 15 newly discovered fungi. From freezing Antarctica to the humid forests of Madagascar, they made exciting discoveries about Earth's biodiversity.

Local communities were important to the team's work. One lucky orchid was only found because of the rare 'helmet vanga' bird. People have been working to protect the Madagascan forest home of this special bird. Luckily, the orchid was discovered before it was lost forever. An underground tree which has been found in Borneo holds a surprising secret. Scientists are keen to understand how the tree can reproduce as its flowers develop beneath the soil! For generations, local people have eaten its delicious fruit, which also grows below the surface.

Some plants have found ways to live in challenging conditions. Certain trees in the Kalahari desert exist up to 90 percent underground. Lichens, which are a type of fungi, were found living on rocks in Antarctica.
