Get on the green bus in Scotland - 20th November 2020
Aberdeen in Scotland has a new double decker bus. It is powered by hydrogen. This is the first double decker in the world to use hydrogen.
Aberdeen used to produce the most oil in Europe. Today, it is focusing on a greener future.
15 hydrogen buses are coming to Aberdeen. They will help it lower pollution levels. Aberdeen plans to lower pollution to zero by 2045.
Philip Bell is in the local government.
Bell: "These buses are now going to total 15, these double deckers. We’re getting 10 more next year as well so that’ll take our fleet of this generation, first in the world, hydrogen fuelled double decker buses to 25."
Hydrogen buses can make longer journeys than electric buses. They refill at the city’s hydrogen stations. This is faster than recharging. The city hopes passengers like this new, environmentally friendly transport.
David Phillips manages the local bus company.
Phillips: "But ultimately, it’s all about our customers for us. It’s about the opportunity to provide them with a, a means in which to, to improve air quality in the city. It’s a chance to actually look at transport generally around how we can encourage modal shift."
These buses were paid for by the Scottish government and the European Union. Other UK cities may also start using hydrogen buses. Hopefully, they will clean up public transport from London to Birmingham.
