Cloudy with a chance of plastic - 29th January 2024
Scientists in Japan have identified microplastics in cloud samples from Mount Fuji. They were collected by researchers from Waseda University, who identified 9 different plastic polymers. This microplastic air pollution could be affecting the Earth’s climate.
Research has already established that microplastics are present in the ocean, volcanic rocks and even human bodies. However, this study’s the first to prove that they’re also found in clouds.
Microplastics are defined as plastics that measure less than 5 millimetres. In this study, researchers identified 6.7 to 13.9 pieces of microplastic per litre of cloud mist. This included polyethylene, polycarbonate and black rubber.
Scientists are concerned because up in the atmosphere, these microplastics are more affected by the sun’s UV light. This causes them to release greenhouse gases, which increase climate change. They also change properties and make them attract water, which alters how clouds start to form.
When it rains, these microplastics fall back to Earth and enter our food and water sources. They’re then consumed by humans or animals and have been found in people’s heart, brain, lungs and blood.
Health research has linked microplastics to cancer and digestion problems in humans. Studies on mice have identified increased stress and multiple health issues.
It’s uncertain exactly what causes plastic air pollution. However, potential sources include industrial sprays, ocean waves, and dust that’s lifted up by car tyres.
Although plastics have improved our lives, they can have damaging effects on our environment. Scientists are encouraging people to take action to limit their use.
