Frozen baby mammoth found in Canada - 18th July 2022
A baby mammoth was discovered in Canada. The mammoth's frozen body was found in the ice in northern Canada. Scientists have dated the animal to 30,000 years ago. The ice has kept the whole mammoth in perfect condition.
Gold miners in Yukon, Canada, discovered the buried animal while they were working. It's the first time a whole mammoth from the ice age was found in North America.
The baby mammoth discovery was made in western Yukon. The area belongs to the Tr'ondek Hwech'in people. They've given the baby a name in the local Han language. She's called 'Nun cho ga', which means 'big baby animal'.
Grant Zazula studies ancient bones and fossils from the ice age. He's very excited about the baby animal, which he says is beautiful. His lifelong dream was to see a perfectly preserved woolly mammoth.
Scientists have examined the animal. She's a young female and is the same size as another young mammoth which was found in Siberia in 2007.
Nun cho ga's special because when she died, she was frozen in the ice. It's incredible that her skin and hair is still there. Scientists are very excited to be able to learn more about life in the area 30,000 years ago.
