Jackfruit: a new superfood - 3rd July 2020
Jackfruit is a spiky green fruit. It has a strong sweet smell. Now, people are calling it a 'superfood'.
Jackfruit is from South Asia. A lot of jackfruit grows there. South Asian people can't eat all of it.
India grows a lot of jackfruit. Now, they are selling it to new customers. These customers don’t want to eat meat.
Chefs love cooking with jackfruit. They can use it in lots of different ways. You can make cake, juice or ice cream with it. You can cook it and put it in curries. In the West, people use it to make burgers and tacos.
Vegetarians love jackfruit. But now, meat-eaters like it too. Jackfruit is good for your health.
James Josep has a company, Jackfruit 365. It makes jackfruit flour.
Josep: "Jackfruit is one of the most under-researched superfoods in the world. Nobody has paid attention to jackfruit."
"So for example, 30 grams of jackfruit flour has one gram of pectin. That is the equivalent of three apples. An apple a day keeps the doctor away because of pectin.”
