Barbados takes charge - 8th December 2021
30th November 2021 saw the Caribbean island of Barbados declare itself the world’s newest republic.
Although Barbados won independence from Great Britain in 1966, only now has it severed colonial ties to the British throne.
Replacing Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, Dame Sandra Mason was inaugurated as the country’s president.
Dame Sandra Mason: "Vessel Republic Barbados has set sail on her maiden voyage. May she weather all storms and land our country and citizens safely on the horizons and shores which are ahead of us."
Representing Britain's 95 year old monarch, Prince Charles also addressed the Barbadian people.
Prince Charles: "The creation of this republic offers a new beginning. But it also marks a point on a continuum. A milestone on the long road you have not only travelled, but which you have built."
Members of the House of Assembly and the Senate all swore an oath of allegiance to serve the new republic.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley acknowledged the challenges that lay ahead, and that the new republic had to move forward together.
Mia Amor Mottley: "396 years of a system of government is not two years. And it is with that in mind that I am conscious that we have a responsibility as of December 1st, tomorrow, to ensure that our nation moves as one."
1st December has been declared Barbadian Independence Day. Ahead of its first celebration, the Prime Minister honoured international singing sensation Rihanna, the most celebrated child of Barbados, with its National Hero award.
Rihanna: "I have travelled the world and received several awards and recognitions, but nothing, nothing compares to being recognized in the soil that you grew in."
It's hoped that Rhianna’s example will inspire young Barbadians. They too can achieve and support the new republic.
