Amazing discoveries of new plants - 25th March 2024
Researchers from Kew Gardens, London's Royal Botanic Gardens, have grown our understanding of life on Earth. Last year, scientists named 76 new species of plant and 15 newly discovered fungi. From freezing Antarctica to the humid forests of Madagascar, they made exciting discoveries about Earth's biodiversity.
Local communities were important to the team's work. One lucky orchid was only found because of the rare 'helmet vanga' bird. People have been working to protect the Madagascan forest home of this special bird. Luckily, the orchid was discovered before it was lost forever. This shows how the lives of species in nature are often interconnected.
An underground tree which has been found in Borneo holds a surprising secret. Scientists are keen to understand how the tree can reproduce as its flowers develop beneath the soil! For generations, local people have eaten its delicious fruit, which also grows below the surface.
Some plants have found ways to live in challenging conditions. Certain trees in the Kalahari desert exist up to 90 percent underground. Lichens, which are a type of fungi, were found living on rocks in Antarctica.
Understanding Earth's biodiversity is essential for the future of our planet. Nature's systems depend on the way different species of plants and animals live together. These amazing discoveries remind us of the beauty of nature.
Human actions and climate change now mean 75 percent of undiscovered plants are at risk. There may be 100,000 unknown species, say researchers. Every discovery's a chance to protect more of the planet and understand its value.
