Ancient bathhouse uncovered by builders - 19th April 2021
A bathhouse which was built in the 12th century has been found in Seville. Builders in the Spanish city came across the Arabic building while they were renovating a popular bar. The structure was hidden within the walls and the ceiling of the present day bar.
The well known tapas bar, Giralda Bar, opened for business in 1923. Because the summer of 2020 was unusually quiet, the bar’s owners organised some renovations.
However, the work soon revealed more than they’d expected. Work on the ceiling uncovered a star-shaped skylight. Archaeologists were called in and 90 ceiling skylights were discovered.
Builders took down walls in the bar to find more surprises. They had hidden the original bathhouse walls. These were decorated with beautiful Islamic painted designs.
The baths have by far the best decoration of any in south-west Europe. One archaeologist, Alvaro Jimenez, said the find was “completely unexpected”.
When they saw the skylights, they instantly understood the building was a bathhouse. However, the baths are remarkable because the decoration is in such an excellent state.
A century ago, architect Vicente Traver designed the Giralda Bar in an Arabic style. Its four current owners are relieved that he preserved the original bathhouse. His decision means visitors to the bar can enjoy its beauty. The Giralda Bar now serves tapas in an unforgettable environment.
