Spain wins Women's World Cup - 23rd August 2023 Alles anzeigen

Spain has won the 2023 Women's World Cup for the first time. They played against England who lost 1-0. Stadium Australia in Sydney was full, for the final. Seventy-six thousand football fans attended the match. Fans around the world also watched online. It was a hard match.

The winning goal of the game was scored by Spanish captain Olga Carmona. Spain was also given a penalty kick during the second half of the match. But the goal was saved by English goalkeeper Mary Earps. When the whistle blew, Spanish fans cheered. But for the English fans, there was disappointment.

Elena Kerstjens: "It was amazing since minute one. It was great."

Arturojimenez De Parga: "I think overall we had more chances. England had one post, I think. We had a couple of chances. Their goalkeeper was really good but we missed a penalty. So I think we're, yeah, we deserved the victory."

Juliet Mason: "It was so close, could have gone another way. And yeah we were just, just a little bit unlucky on the day. Just didn't quite click, but yeah we're so proud of the girls, just disappointed for them because it was, it could have gone the other way. Fine margins in football."

The competition took place in Australia and New Zealand, and lasted for a month. This was the biggest support that women's football had ever received. But women players are demanding better pay. They want to be paid equally to male footballers.

Fifty years ago, women weren't allowed to play the sport in the UK. Today this is still the situation in many countries. For London student Jolie Hill, the Women's World Cup makes her feel proud of the women's achievements.

Jolie Hill: "Everyone thought I was crying cause we lost, but I'm crying cause we done, they done us so proud. As women in society today, we can prove that we can do better than what the men -- well, as good as what the men can do, you know. Like, we've got, come to a final. The fact that like 50-60 years ago, we weren't even allowed to play football in this country, and now we're here in the final of the Women's World Cup... I'm so proud of them. Like, genuinely, it, it does bring a tear to my eye." Weniger anzeigen
