England's Lionesses win EURO 2022 - 4th August 2022 Alles anzeigen

56 years to the day since England's men won the 1966 World Cup, the women's team have triumphed in the European Championship. Known as the Lionesses, they faced down their German counterparts, who have a record 8 EURO titles.

Playing at the legendary Wembley stadium to a record crowd of over 87,000, the match was level 1-1 at the final whistle. It was only when a chance came for Manchester United forward Chloe Kelly in extra time that 'the Lionesses' secured victory.

Much of the championship was played to full stadiums, a testament to the rising enthusiasm for the women's game. The outcome left England fans overjoyed.

Ehis Idiake: "Amazing. The women were awesome, like great football. Great end to end entertainment. And we won so yes! Come on England!"

Pauline Braham: "To just, you know, be in this stadium, and see it full. And to see the journey that has taken place for women's football – and the respect that I think now they need to put on it, on its name."

As the self-declared 'home of football', when England plays, the chant "Football's coming home" goes up. Despite this confidence, it's taken over half a century for that dream to come true, thanks to the women's team.

Like many hoping to inspire their daughters, Charlie Bunting took Harriet, aged 5, to experience the match.

Charlie Bunting: "Yeah, I said to Harriet in the ground, she's got to, she's got to do all she can to try and remember this. Coz, I said the last time England won a tournament was when Nanny was born, which was a long time ago. So yeah, she's got to remember this for as long as you can. Because it's very, very special."

The outcome was nevertheless contested by some, as Germany's coach complained that poor refereeing had denied them an early penalty which, if it'd been given, could've handed them the win.

At the ground, fans appeared philosophical, albeit a little sore.

Jonna Brengel: "Bit disappointing about the result in the end. But I think we can be proud of the team and the performance from the all tournament. And yeah, I think that it's a right step in the direction and all people in Germany can be proud."

Caroline Schoeyo: "I mean, obviously I'm a bit disappointed. ['Come on England'] Yeah, obviously, I'm a bit disappointed, but it is what it is." Weniger anzeigen
