Lionesses bring football home - 4th August 2022
London's iconic Wembley stadium was a fitting site for England's victory in the EURO 2022 final, its first since the men's team clinched the 1966 World Cup. Playing on the same hallowed turf as then, the Lionesses secured a 2-1 win against their German opponents.
A record 87,000 spectators packed into Wembley to see the Lionesses prevail over a team which holds an unmatched 8 previous European Championships. Drawing 1-1 after normal time, the drama continued until Chloe Kelly found the net in the 110th minute of the match. Delighting fans, the Manchester United striker's goal crowned a tournament of packed stadiums which underlined the popularity of the women's game.
Ehis Idiake: "Amazing. The women were awesome, like great football. Great end to end entertainment. And we won so yes! Come on England!"
Pauline Braham: "To just, you know, be in this stadium, and see it full. And to see the journey that has taken place for women's football – and the respect that I think now they need to put on it, on its name."
Having staked its claim as 'the home of football', no England international's been complete without choruses of "Football's coming home" echoing around the stands. Finally, after 56 years of dreaming, the women's team delivered on the prophetic claim.
With women's football increasing girls' participation in sport, parent Charlie Bunting ensured little Harriet, just 5, glimpsed the moment.
Charlie Bunting: "Yeah, I said to Harriet in the ground, she's got to, she's got to do all she can to try and remember this. Coz, I said the last time England won a tournament was when Nanny was born, which was a long time ago. So yeah, she's got to remember this for as long as you can. Because it's very, very special."
Dissatisfaction on the losing side focused on the referee sidelining an appeal for a penalty for a goal line handball early on. As the national coach speculated that this could have sent the match Germany's way, fans were full of praise rather than despondency.
Jonna Brengel: "Bit disappointing about the result in the end. But I think we can be proud of the team and the performance from the all tournament. And yeah, I think that it's a right step in the direction and all people in Germany can be proud."
Caroline Schoeyo: "I mean, obviously I'm a bit disappointed. ['Come on England'] Yeah, obviously, I'm a bit disappointed, but it is what it is."
