England's Lionesses win EURO 2022 - 4th August 2022
England have won their second international football trophy, exactly 56 years after the first. The well-known men's 1966 World Cup win and England's women's 2022 EUROs victory both took place at London's Wembley stadium.
England's 'Lionesses' took on Germany, who've won the European Championship 8 times before. A stadium crowd of more than 87,000 saw an exciting game draw 1-1 at the final whistle. In extra time, England striker Chloe Kelly pushed England ahead.
The renewed popularity of women's football was seen in the tournament's full stadiums. Fans were delighted with the result.
Ehis Idiake: "Amazing. The women were awesome, like great football. Great end to end entertainment. And we won so yes! Come on England!"
Pauline Braham: "To just, you know, be in this stadium, and see it full. And to see the journey that has taken place for women's football – and the respect that I think now they need to put on it, on its name."
England claims to be 'the home of football', and supporters regularly chant "Football's coming home" at international matches. However, until the lionesses recent win, fans had been waiting 56 years.
Women's football's having positive impacts on girls' sport. Parent Charlie Bunting brought Harriet, aged 5, to the final.
Charlie Bunting: "Yeah, I said to Harriet in the ground, she's got to, she's got to do all she can to try and remember this. Coz, I said the last time England won a tournament was when Nanny was born, which was a long time ago. So yeah, she's got to remember this for as long as you can. Because it's very, very special."
Some, however, were less than thrilled. A German request for a penalty was rejected, which took away a chance for a first-half goal – and potentially the match.
Although they'd hoped for a win, Germany's fans remained positive.
Jonna Brengel: "Bit disappointing about the result in the end. But I think we can be proud of the team and the performance from the all tournament. And yeah, I think that it's a right step in the direction and all people in Germany can be proud."
Caroline Schoeyo: "I mean, obviously I'm a bit disappointed. ['Come on England'] Yeah, obviously, I'm a bit disappointed, but it is what it is."
